How to look after a deck so it lasts for years

A plastic-coated deck will last for years if you play with clean, dry hands and store it in its box away from moisture. Avoid bending the cards when you shuffle, and give them an occasional wipe with a dry cloth.

Clean hands, clean cards

Finger grease is a playing card's worst enemy: it makes the cards stick together and stop sliding. Wash your hands before playing and avoid eating sunflower seeds over the table mat (yes, we know it is a tradition).

Keep it in its box

The box is not just for show: it protects the cards from light, dust, and bumps. If possible, keep it away from the bathroom or kitchen, as humidity warps the cardboard.

Shuffling without bending

The bridge shuffle (American shuffle) performed in the air bends the cards significantly. Do it while resting them on the table or use an overhand shuffle. We explain these methods in how to shuffle correctly.

Cleaning

A dry microfibre cloth is usually enough. If they are very dirty, spreading a little talcum powder and then wiping it off will restore their glide. Never get them wet.

If they warp

Place them under some heavy books for a couple of days. Many cards will recover significantly.
