Traditional games in Asturias

Tute is the quintessential card game of Asturias, where local versions such as Tute de caballo (knight Tute) and Tute asturiano (Asturian Tute) each have their own rules for declaring combinations and drawing trumps. Games are a regular feature of chigres (local taverns), community centres and homes, where people also play Mus, Brisca and Subastao.
Tute asturiano
Every area has its own way of playing: who leads, how much each declaration is worth, and what happens if someone breaks the rules on following suit. The important thing is to agree on the rules before you start. To explore the main versions, take a look at the variants of Tute.
Other local games
- Mus, widely played all along Spain’s northern coast.
- Brisca, for quick games.
- Subastao, a variant of Tute in which pairs bid on how many points they will score.
A game at the chigre
In Asturias, a game of cards goes hand in hand with cider and good conversation. It is part of social life in many villages and neighbourhoods. We explore this in leisure in Spanish taverns and popular games by region.
