A house of cards is a structure in which playing cards lean against one another for support. The expression also describes something fragile or lacking a solid foundation, such as a plan, a business or a lie that could easily fall apart.

The expression

  • “His alibi was a house of cards.”
  • “The company collapsed like a house of cards.”

How to build one

  1. Find a non-slip surface, such as a card table mat.
  2. Lean two cards against each other in an upside-down “V” shape.
  3. Make several pairs in a row and lay cards flat across them to form a roof.
  4. Repeat on top, using one fewer pair on each level.

Slightly worn cards grip better than new ones. And keep draughts out.

Records and patience

Some builders create enormous structures using thousands of packs of cards. It is a hobby that calls for a steady hand and a calm mind — quite the opposite of what the expression suggests.

If you would rather use your cards to play a game, choose a well-kept pack: how to look after a pack of cards.
