What is a «parda» in card games?

3 de Oros de una baraja de Lascuarenta.es3 de Copas de una baraja de Lascuarenta.es

A parda is a tied trick in games such as Truco and Truc, where players on opposing teams play cards of equal value, such as two threes. Neither player wins that trick, leaving the hand to be decided in subsequent rounds.

Why does it happen so often?

In these games, the suit does not matter for many cards: a three of Copas (Cups) and a three of Oros (Coins) are worth exactly the same. Therefore, ties are frequent.

How it is resolved

  • Parda in the first trick: whoever wins the second trick wins the hand.
  • Parda in the second trick: whoever won the first trick wins the hand.
  • Parda in all three: the hand goes to the player who is "mano" (the lead player), that is, the one who played first.

There are house variations, so it is advisable to clarify the rules before playing.

What is said at the table

"Parda y canto", "parda la primera"... these are phrases heard in any game. In Argentinian Truco, tying on purpose (empardar) is also a way to save good cards for later. If you enjoy this vocabulary, you will find many more words in the glosario.
