Yes, it is possible to memorise the order of a whole pack of cards using memory techniques; champions can do it with 52 cards in under twenty seconds. Many people can learn to do this without an exceptional memory, turning each card into an image and placing it along a mental route.

The memory palace

The most widely used technique dates back to ancient times: the method of loci, or memory palace. You imagine a route you know well, through your home for example, and place an image in each spot. Then, to recall the images, you walk through it in your mind.

An image for every card

First, you assign a fixed, striking image to each card. For example, the as de oros (ace of coins) could be a giant coin; the caballo de espadas (knight of swords), a galloping knight. With a Spanish pack, whose court cards are so recognisable, it is even easier.

How to get started

  • Start with a single suit: ten cards.
  • Create a route through ten places in your home.
  • Place each card in a spot, using an exaggerated or funny scene.
  • Go over the route, then try to recite the order.

Does it help when playing?

At the card table, you do not need to memorise the whole pack, but remembering what has been played does help. That is something you train by playing. We explore it in card games and memory. You can practise against bots in Guiñote (a Spanish trick-taking game), counting trumps in each hand.
