Traditional games in Cantabria

Mus (a Spanish partnership card game) and Tute (a Spanish trick-taking game) are the most widely played card games in Cantabria, especially four-player partnership Tute. Brisca (a Spanish trump-based card game) is also played, and some valleys have their own customs for declarations and signals.
Mus
As elsewhere along Spain’s northern coast, Mus is the game of local societies and social clubs. It features in festival championships and long-standing casual games alike. Brush up on how scoring counters are counted if you fancy joining a table in Cantabria.
Four-player Tute
Played in pairs, with all the cards dealt and an obligation to follow suit from the very first trick. It’s a demanding game that calls for a good memory and careful thought. We explain it in Tute variants and following suit, beating the highest card and trumping.
Every valley has its own customs
Pas, Liébana, Campoo... Each area has its own little rules. That’s the beauty of traditional games: they adapt to every table. For the full picture, take a look at popular games by region.
